Connecting Essay 5

This photograph shows the aspect of depth as the technique depth of field has been shown. This has been shown by the main focus of the stack of pebbles being very sharp and in focus and the background being blurred to show the depth of the background. This photograph also shows the technique selective colour and this is to make the flowers on the pebbles stand out as the colour yellow is very distinct and obviously seen. The technique selective colour I feel is very affective because it makes the main focus stand out and also makes the photograph more interesting to look at. This photograph shows a section of the landscape which I feel is very affective because it allows the tones and textures in the photograph to look more bold and powerful. This is because of the close up photograph the smooth texture of the pebbles stand out very clearly and make the photograph look very realistic. As well as the soft and delicate texture of the yellow flowers shown much clearer which show the beauty of nature much better. Furthermore the tones in this photograph are also very well shown as the dark tones make the photograph more enchanting to look at and give the photographer more of an intense depth when looking at. Overall I feel that this aspect of landscape is a very successful photographs at showing detail in a bold way and the techniques used make the photograph look very complex.

This photograph was taken in my aspects of landscape exam time and was taken on the locations of a cemetery. The aspect that this landscape is expressing is the aspect of depth as the man made dove is in focus and shown very sharply where as the background of the cemetery is blurred to enhance the scale of the landscape as well. I feel that photographing depth in a cemetery allows depth to be seen in a different way as the scenery is a lot different to for example then the country side or the sea side as it has more objects involved to show depth from a different perspective. This photograph has been edited to the technique of selective colour this is because all the background has been converted to black and white and the dove has been sectioned out by the lasso tool so that the colour stays on show. However in real life the dove is white but by editing the dove with a colour enhancement tool allowed me to bring a colour into the dove very softly without making it look very fake and edited. I feel that the colour blue was best fit for the theme of a cemetery as its a very cold colour with expresses the haunting atmosphere of a cemetery. Lastly the graves that are shown in this photograph enhance the depth even more and make the depth technique look more interesting as the graves highlight the direction of the depth and make the background more intriguing to look at.

Both these photographs connect because they both show the aspect of depth in the photographs by using the technique depth of field to show a sharp main focus. The main focus in both these photographs are objects that have been man made which allow the smooth texture of the materials to be shown much clearer. Furthermore both photographs also show the technique selective colour as all the background in both photographs are black and white and the main focus is in colour to make the photograph more appealing to look at.

Connecting Essay 4

This photograph was taken from the photographer Charlie Waite and shows the aspect of depth in a landscape. This photograph has been taken and edited very professionally as the quality of the picture is very sharp and shows the detail of the landscape very clear. The editing process of converting this photograph to black and white creates a more haunting feel to the photograph which makes it more interesting to look at. As well as the tones in the tree's especially stand out and the light and darkness in the branches make them look three dimensional in the picture as if you are looking at them in real life. The aspect of depth is shown in this photograph through the parallel path that converges inwards as the landscape gets further away from the photograph. The tree's also exaggerate the aspect of depth as they also converge inwards as they get further away from the camera. This idea of depth makes the photograph more intriguing to look at and shows nature in a different way. All though there is many tree's in this photograph the one positioned to the left of the photograph draws my attention as its the only tree that shows its full structure which is very bold. This photograph has been taken at a very low angle which increases the aspect of depth and makes the tree's look taller than what they are which makes the photograph more stunning to look at.

This photograph was taken for my aspect of landscape shoot and shows the aspect of depth in the photograph this is because the depth is shown with the path converging inwards as it gets further away from the camera. The depth of the path shows the message of a journey that people take in life whether its the right or the wrong journey. The tree's in this photograph also enhance this aspect of depth and make this photograph more interesting to look at. This photograph has been converted to black and white because the colours in the actual first hand photograph didn't create a bold or striking affect therefore by converting the photograph to black and white gives it a more appealing affect. The black and white effect also illustrates the tones in this photograph as where the shadows are darkness is shown and the light tones complement this very well. The landscape is also showing in the background of the main focus of the path which highlights the aspect of scale as the landscape is shown to be very large in the distance. Lastly to photograph this picture I had slightly had the camera at a low angle however I feel to improve this photograph I could have made the angle much lower to get more of a blurred affect showing the technique depth of field instead of the aspect of depth.

In conclusion both these photographs connect because they both show the aspect of depth in the same way. This is because they both show the parallel convergence of depth in a path as well as tree's being shown in both of these photographs to enhance the aspect of depth. Furthermore both photographs are converted to black and white which bring out the tones and highlight where the shadows are which make the landscapes look more natural and realistic.

Conecting Essay 3

This photograph was taken by the photographer Fay Godwin and is part of her landscape photography located on the beach. This photograph contains the aspect of scale and depth. This is because depth has been used in this photograph to enhance the scale of the photograph and to make it more appealing to look at. The depth is enhanced through the wooden barriers that are built in line going into the sea which enhances the depth as it directs the technique more. This photograph has also been converted into black and white and this is very affective as it brings out the tones of the photograph more. The tones are shown especially in the sky as the clouds create very random shapes which highlight lightness and darkness in them. The light tones are also enhanced by the light of the sun which makes this photograph look very eye caching and stunning to look at. The idea of photographing aspect of landscape of the sea side creates a calming nature to the photograph and shows a different location then the country side where depth can be affective. Furthermore in this photograph the element of texture also stands out and this is because the stones, pebbles that are shown show the hard and rough texture very clearly and detailed this is because they are close to the camera. The texture allows the photograph to look as realistic as possible and makes the landscape show a range of elements that make the photograph look creative. This photograph has been taken at a slightly higher level then the barriers which allows the texture of the stones and pebbles to be seen more in the image rather than blurred.

This photograph was taken for my project aspects of landscape and was taken at the location of Bournemouth beach. This photograph was taken from the main influence of the photographer Fay Godwin and her sea side landscape shoot. The idea of converting the whole photograph black and white was because it was inspired by Fay Godwin as well as the tones in this landscape stand out as the barrier in the sea is very dark and the tones in the sea create a more interesting a realistic photograph. The aspect of depth in this photograph is enhanced through the wooden barrier that is built in a straight line in the sea showing the direction where the depth is being highlighted. This also makes the sea a more interesting photograph as its got an object which draws the viewers eyes too. However to improve this photograph I feel that the photograph could have been taken at a different angle to show the sky has a more iconic feature in this photograph as from this angle it looks very duel and doesn't have an element of shape to it. All though the shades in the sky are very eye caching I feel it isn't as affective as the sky in the fay Godwin's photograph above this one. Lastly the scale of the sea is enhanced in this photograph and this photograph shows how large the sea is to an extent.

The connection between both of these photographs are that because my photograph was inspired and influenced by Fay Godwin's work they both have several similarities. These are firstly that both photographs are located at the beach and show the same part of the beach enhancing the depth of the sea. Secondly both photographs have been converted into black and white and this is to show in more detail the light and dark tones that are in the landscape to make the photographs more appealing to look at. Lastly the idea of the barrier in both the photographs in the sea or leading into the sea to enhance the aspect of depth as it stretches out the depth and shows a direction to the technique.

Connecting Essay 2

This photograph was taken by Liam Frank-land and is a landscape photograph that shows the aspect of depth and scale. This photograph is a very influential photograph and the idea of decreasing the color to a faint black and white affect allows the bright red flowers to stand out hugely. However the photographer hasn't removed all the color in the landscape showing the beauty of the setting still. In addition this photograph has been taken at a slight low angle this is to enhance the height of the flowers to make them look a lot bigger in size than what they are. Where as in real life they would be very tiny to look at this is very effective as it brings a bold focus to the landscape which interests the viewers looking at this photograph more. Furthermore the aspect of depth of field has been used and the technique is shown as the depth of the landscape is blurred to look further than what it is this empathizes the aspect of scale in the landscape. As well as the main focus of the flowers in focus to create an eye catching affect to the photograph. The connotation of red is love this photograph expresses this as well as expressing the beauty of landscapes. Without the technique depth of field used to enhance the scale this photograph would show creativity and complexity. The idea in this landscape of a flower which is grown to its fullest and in contrast with this a half grown flower next to it allows this photograph to show an aspect of a life cycle of a flower which makes this photograph have more meaning to it then just a landscape. I especially like this photograph because of the use of the selective color and this is something that I have shown through out my portfolio on landscapes as I feel that photographs like this are very successful and gaining its viewers attention through the use of color.

This photograph was taken as part of my aspects of landscape project and shows the aspect
of depth. This photograph was taken at Hyde park in London and was a section of a huge landscape. The reason why I chose to photograph this part of the landscape is because it allowed the textures, tones and depth to be highlighted more to show the beauty of landscapes and nature. The colours in this landscape are also a main aspect as the vibrant and striking tones of orange in the flower and in the distance showing depth of field are very bold and stand out hugely because they catch my eye instantly. The smooth and delicate texture of the flower in focus is seen in a lot of detail because of the sharpness of the picture. Furthermore this photograph was taken so that the flower is positioned at the right hand side of the photograph this allows the depth of the flowers to be more interesting as its not covering the whole of the photograph or in the centre showing a uniqueness to this photograph. The aspect of depth was taught to me at the beginning of this project and the technique that I learnt I showed here and I feel that this is my most successful and affective depth of field photograph I have taken. In this photograph the orange and green colours clash which makes this photograph even more appealing as well as these colours enhancing the beauty of flowers. By having only one selected flower in focus gives this photograph a main focus point which is where the eyes of the audience will be drawn to when they first take a look at this photograph.

Both these photographs have a connection because firstly they both have a main focus of a flower this is because both photographs reflect the beauty of nature and this is both shown with the technique depth of field. In addition the technique of depth of field that has been used in both photographs enhance the depth of the landscape and enhance the scale of the photograph as well. Also both photographs rely on the colours in the landscape to make the photograph interesting and creative to look at. This is because the bright and vibrant colours shown in the flowers in both photographs make the landscape more appealing to look at and create an eye catching picture. Lastly both photographs have slightly used the technique selective colour as both backgrounds are a very faint colour that allows the main focus of the flowers stand out as the bold colour is even more affective against duel colours.

Connecting Essay 1

This photograph was taken by the photographer James Ravilious and is an aspect of landscape photography. This photograph was taken as the specific tree that has been captured has very unusual and intriguing branches that spiral outwards filling the whole of the photograph. This creates nature to be very complex to observe as the branches allow this photograph to look very creative. This photograph has been taken at a slight low angle as the depth of the stalk is very small to create the scale affect of the branches. This exaggerates the size of the branches which makes them stand out even more. I feel that by photographing this tree from the centre allows the whole of the tree to be seen which makes a more out standing picture then if only a section had been taken of the tree. Furthermore the idea of converting the whole photograph to black and white enhances the tones that the tree has in real life. This is because the branches all have lightness and darkness to them depending on where there are shadows. This makes this photograph look very striking as the distinct shades in the tree make the photograph very realistic. The tones in this photograph don't over whelm the photograph however make the natural atmosphere of the photograph more interesting to look at and allow the tree to boldly stand out. In addition to this the use of the formal element texture is shown in this photograph as the rough texture of the tree is seen very clearly which gives the tree a very edgy look overall. The message behind this photograph is that the branches all stand for the paths that life can take you on and by this photograph showing this allows any audience that view this to see this landscape photograph as a way to reflect on life. Overall I feel that when I first looked at this photograph I found it very boring and uninteresting because it is just a photograph of a tree. However once I began to see the elements in the photograph and how the shape of the branches build to the complexity of this photograph I became very interested in and was inspired to re create this photograph in my own aspects of landscape portfolio.

This photograph was taken by myself for my aspects of landscape photograph and was inspired by the photographer James Ravilious. The idea was influenced by him however there are similarities and differences where I used his photograph as a base and then developed the photograph from some of my own ideas. This photograph was taken from my very first shoot and was taken at a local park near where I live. The idea of aspect of both scale and depth was demonstrated in this photograph because the scale of the tree was enhanced from the use of the technique depth. The low angle that I used allowed the height of the tree to be exaggerated and to look very dominating in the photograph. In this photograph the tones and textures stand out very nicely this is because the tones in the tree are shown by the lightness and darkness in the bark and the branches I feel that by the tones being enhanced from the curves and levels allows the tree to look very dynamic and three dimensional. Furthermore the textures in this tree are very clear and obvious as the rough texture especially in the bark stand out and make this photograph look very realistic. In addition the reason why I chose to enhance the vibrancy of the colours in this photograph and not convert the whole layer to black and white is because I feel that the deep browns and greens in the tree shows the beauty of nature and creates a more positive atmosphere when looking at the whole photograph.

The connection between both these photographs are that the main focus is exactly the same as both photographs are capturing a large intriguing tree which is a section of a landscape. The composition of  both of the photographs are the same as they are both centring the tree and a slight low angle has been used to create an aspect of depth to the photograph to enhance the size and heigh of the both the tree's. Furthermore both photographs are also very reliant on the tones and textures to make the whole photograph look very eye catching and striking which both are a success. This is because the tones are very deep and the textures allows both photographs to look very real even though its a photograph of a tree not the actual tree's in real life. In addition the difference between both these photographs are the colours this is because I chose to keep mine in colour where as the photographer James Ravilious decided to convert his to black and white. I feel that by his photograph being in black and white does enhance the tones better however the use of colour in my photograph shows the development I made when re creating his photograph.

Liam Frankland- Photographer

The reason why I have chosen to look further into the photograph of Liam Frankland is because I find his photography work very moving and my first impressions were very positive. This is because the different ideas that he has used create a different emotion for each one. As well as the idea of using the aspect of depth in the majority of his work will help me gain ideas for when my portfolio leads into this aspect. Furthermore his photography work is very different as it doesn't just establish the idea of scale in a landscape. His work takes a section of the landscape and either creates a focus that is very close or creates a depth leading up to the focus.

This photograph was taken by the photographer Charlie Waite and the aspect of depth is shown in this photograph. This is because the technique depth of field has been used and by making the red flower in focus and the background blurred enhances this affect and makes it more obvious when viewing it. This photograph also used the technique selective colour and this is because the whole of the landscape as been edited to a shade of black and white to allow the deep red in the flowers to stand out. The technique selective colour is something that I find very interesting in a landscape photograph and will be something that I will use in my own landscape photography shoots when I come to editing. Furthermore the colour red has con nations of love and romance which is what this photograph affectively shows. In addition the low angle in this photograph creates the depth of the piece which allows the landscape in the background to appear very large in scale. This therefore also meets the aspect of scale which will be my starting point to my project aspects of landscape.

This photograph was also captured by the photographer Liam Frankland and shows the aspect of depth in this landscape. This photograph is a very good example at showing how Liam Frankland had captured a section of a landscape to make his work more interesting and different to look at. The idea of creating depth in this landscape has been done very well and what I especially like about this photograph is that in the blurred background the object is very bold still and creates a different perspective to depth which makes the blurred background as bold as the plants that are in focus and close up. Furthermore the benefit of taking the plants very close up allows the textures to stand out as the delicate and rough textures in the plants stand out and make this photograph more realistic to look at. In addition the composition of this photograph is very affective as the plants surround the blurred background allowing the contrast between natural and man made to be more obvious and stand out better.
This photograph was taken by the photographer Liam Frankland and this photograph shows the aspect of depth and scale in the landscapes. This is because the use of the technique depth of field has been used to enhance the scale of the landscape and to make the photograph more interesting to look at. The idea of the feather being the focused object on its own creates a message of loneliness. The feather being up close allows the textures to be seen much more detailed and clear this is because the furry texture seen much clearer allows the photograph to look more realistic and natural. The colours in this photograph are very duel and neutral however shows how the photographer Liam Frankland can use different tones and colours to create a stunning landscape photograph.

This photograph was captured by the photographer Liam Frankland and I feel is one of his most affective photographs at showing the aspect of depth in a landscape. This is because the depth in this photograph is enhanced through the length of the rope and by taking this photograph at an extremely low angle allows the boat to be enhanced in scale as it is seen much higher and larger. The black and white affect brings out all the tones in the wooden material as well as bringing out the hard and rough texture of the wood making the boat very old and abandoned. As well as the texture of the pebbles and stones on the ground highlighting the smooth texture of them leading up to the boat. Furthermore the sky in this photograph stands out and by Liam Frankland the photographer converting the sky to black and white allows the tones to be highlighted in the sky and the white clouds to stand out from this. I feel that this photograph is very influential to me and will be something I will look back on for ideas when I am in need of influence.

The influence that Charlie Waite has on my aspects of landscape project is that in his work he used the technique selective colour and this is something that doesn't appear in many of the landscape photographers I have looked further into. Therefore this technique and the way he uses it will influence my own work and will allow me to see how affective he has used it to use it in mine. I am also influenced in the way he only uses one object to create his depth of field showing the simplicity in his work however it looking very bold and affective overall.

To summarise the research and analysation that I have done to look further into Liam Frankland's work is that all his work focuses more on the technique of depth of field rather than the the tones and colours which I found more in the other photographers I looked into. Therefore his work will help me develop my skill of depth of field and make mine look more bold and complex by seeing what angle he had taken his from and what landscapes work better using the technique depth of field. I overall found all this research into his photography very helpful and will use his influence a lot in my aspects of landscape photography.

Charlie Waite- Photographer

The reason why I have chosen Charlie Waite to look further into and analyse his work is because he is an English landscape photographer and my project is aspect of landscapes. He focuses on the lighting and shading in his landscapes which is something that I can develop in my own work and improve on therefore I am gaining influence through his techniques in his work. Furthermore in the majority of his work the idea of depth is shown. This is shown in a very sleek and effortless way where the angle of his camera and positioning of where he is standing is very precise. Therefore by looking at his work will allow me to see where the best angles are to make my aspect of depth in my landscapes look as affective as possible.

This photograph was taken by the photographer Charlie Waite and the use of the technique depth was shown in this photograph this is because the photographer has positioned himself to be in the left hand corner of this landscape and uses a low angle to enhance the length of the path and to exaggerate the depth of the tree's. This photograph has been edited in black and white and I feel that this is very affective this is because it allows the tones in the tree's and the path to be exaggerates and stand out. Charlie Waite focuses on the use of tones and shading in his photography therefore by him converting the photograph to black and white increases the use of tones and makes this photograph very stunning to look at. The idea of the path becoming very narrow as it converges inwards creates a message of a journey that this photograph is about to take you on. I feel that this photograph is very affective and will inspire me a lot when I come to photographing my own work.

This photograph was also taken by the photographer Charlie Waite and shows the aspect of depth in the landscape as well as the element of shadows. The colours in this photograph are very bright and vibrant which makes this photograph look very eye catchy as well as the sun being the focal point of this photograph as the lighting stands out and creates a very warming atmosphere. The aspect of depth that is shown in this landscape has been shown by the row of tree's in this photogaph that get smaller as the photograph becomes further away. this photograph also shows the repetition technique as the photographer Charlie Waite has repeated his photograph twice to create a reflection. This is very affective because it creates a more bold and dynamic photograph that creates a relaxed atmosphere to the piece. Furthermore the sky is another iconic focus to this photograph because of  the intriguing shapes in the clouds and the beaming sun creating a vibrant blue that complements the technique of depth used in this landscape. This photograph is very inspiring for me as its something that I can re create in my own work and this will therefore show the connection between Charlie Waite and my aspect of landscape portfolio.

This photograph was taken by the photographer Charlie Waite and shows the aspect of depth and scale in this photograph. This is because firstly the idea of scale is to show how large the landscape is and by depth being included in this enhances the scale by photographing this at a very low angle to exaggerate the length of this landscape. This landscape is very interesting this is because it is very simple as its just showing the land and the sky. However the simplicity of it makes it look more interesting as it has no distractions to take away the beauty of the land. Furthermore the sky in this photograph is very eye catching as the deep blue tones boldly stand out. As well as the textures in the dry and wilted grass are enhanced as the closeness of it allows the roughness of it to be shown. In addition the natural colours through out the whole of the landscape standing out as the rich greens and yellows are colours that will appear in a farmers field which makes this photograph very realistic and rural.

This photograph was taken by the photographer Charlie Waite and is one of my favourite photographs that he has captured for his landscape photography. This is because firstly the tones of the photograph create a warmth that is very affective because of the deep purple and blue colours in the whole of the photograph. I feel that depth is shown extremely well in this photograph because of how long the crops are in this picture. Furthermore the idea of having one tree at the end of the depth of crops creates a metaphor of isolation and loneliness as the tree is standing on its own. I feel that this is very affective and creates a different perspective on  landscape photography. In addition the sky in this photograph is very bold and the pale blue sky is in contrast with the dark and deep tones in the crops which makes this photograph very eye catching. The darkness in between the crops enhance the depth as its makes the aspect of depth in this landscapes very bold and more obvious to notice. This photograph is very inspiring for me and in my project I will develop my photographs by focusing on tones and depth as this is something that I am intrigued by and feel makes a very bold landscape photograph.

The reason why Charlie Waite influences me is because firstly he is a landscape photographer therefore his ideas are going to be from a lot of experience therefore allowing me to re create or develop these to make my work very bold as well. He also focuses a lot on depth and this is something that my aspects of landscapes portfolio will lead into therefore the angles that he has captured the depths in will allow me to see which angle is more affective. Lastly the tones and colours in his work are very eye catching and they show a contrast between light and dark which enhance the depth even more. I feel that this is very influential because it allows me to think more deeply into how I would like to present my landscapes instead of just brightening them and not showing any passion in them.

In conclusion to summarise the photographer Charlie Waite I feel that all his work has one focus and thats to enhance the beauty of the landscapes by showing depth in all of them. I feel that even though the majority of his photographs are all depth he has managed to photograph depth in all different way which allows me as a photography student to gain more ideas on how to not show the aspect of depth all the same way in every one of my photographs. I feel that Charlie Waite will be a huge influence on my work and especially during the editing stage as well where I can experiment with the different affects to gain more deeper tones and colours like he has in all of his work I have looked at.

Work Diary (Shoot 6)

This photograph was taken as part of my aspects of landscape shoot. This photograph shows the aspect of depth firstly because the idea of photographing the small branches of the tree up close and the rest of the landscape in the distance blurred allows the depth to be shown in a different way than what I have in previous shoots. This photograph is very rich in the colour green and this allows the con nation of nature to be shown. This photograph also shows the aspect of scale in this picture as the wide angle allows the landscape to look very large and the depth of the blurred landscapes exaggerates the length of the setting. Furthermore the bright and vibrant green's in this photograph allow this photograph to be very eye catching as well as bringing out delicate and smooth texture of the leaves close up allows this photograph to look very sharp and detailed. This photograph was influenced by the idea that I had in my previous shoot as the work diary states that this depth of field technique is something that I would like to use in this shoot. Therefore this photograph demonstrates the connection between this shoot and my previous shoot.

This shoot was also captured for part of my aspects of landscape shoot and shows the aspect of scale and depth in the image. This is because the depth is shown where the close up tree that is shown as a frame is in focus and the landscape behind it is blurred to exaggerate the depth and scale that it has. This idea was formed because this tree has a strange shape to it where it looks like a frame. Therefore I decided to position the camera to make it look like I was framing the landscape. This photograph could have been angled more low to allow the whole frame to be shown better. However the idea of converting the landscape in black and white and keeping the tree that is in focus in colour allows this idea to be very affective because it highlights the different in depth between the tree and the blurred background. Lastly the closeness of the tree allows the tones and textures to stand out even more this is because it enhances them more and because of the close up technique is allows the viewer to see the detail better.

This shoot was influenced by the success of all my previous shoots that had shown the aspect of scale and depth. Furthermore the idea of using the technique depth of field to blur out the background was a technique that I had learnt at the beginning of unit3 and I found this very interesting and creative therefore I had decided to show it in my landscape photography. In addition the idea of using depth of field where the landscape is blurred to enhance the scale of the landscape was stated in my previous work diary therefore this shoot is showing the connection I have made and how these photographs were thought of and captured.

This idea of depth of field in a landscape I feel is working very well therefore I would like to continue this idea in future shoots to come.

Aspects of landscape (Shoot 6)
