Fay Godwin- Photographer

Fay Godwin

The reason why I have chosen Fay Godwin as one of my photographers to be influenced by and research further into is because she is a landscape photographer. Fay Godwin's photography focuses on the aspect of scale in photography which I felt was a good starting point for my project. Her work also involves the effect black and white and the locations she has photographed at are ideas that I can use for my own photography for example the sea side. Furthermore her photography also begins to develop towards the idea of movement and texture in landscapes which could be the development for my project.

This photograph was taken by the photographer Fay Godwin. This photograph emphasises the aspect of scale through the use of the angle and depth of the photograph. The angle that this photograph was taken in is very interesting as its at a slant to make sure that the depth of the sea is shown and exaggerated. I especially like the how the photograph has been converted into a black and white effect this is because it allows the deep tones to be shown much clearer and creates a very mysterious atmosphere that makes the photograph captivating to look at. The idea of photographing by the sea side is very interesting and is something that I will be influenced by therefore showing how Fay Godwin has inspired me by shooting at a sea side. Lastly the the aspect of movement has been shown slightly in this photograph. This is because the still movement of the waves in the sea emphasises this. The idea of movement in this photographs makes this photograph very complex.

This photograph was taken by the photographer Fay Godwin and is very different to photographs I  have looked at in her portfolio of landscapes. This is because even though this photograph shows the aspect of scale in the landscape it also shows the aspect of decay in a landscape. This is because the main focus of the rubbish and the car in the water has been taken up close to make sure it is seen first. The idea of decay in landscapes contrasts with the beauty of landscapes that she shows in other photographs she has taken. Furthermore by converting the photograph to black and white makes the variety of tones stand out and the idea of decay exaggerated in the dark and sinister tones as ruining nature is a negative thing. This is an idea that my project could lead or develop to as its an interesting idea to photograph.

This photograph is a very interesting photograph that was taken by the photographer Fay Godwin. The idea of loneliness in a photograph is represented in the sign in the middle of the field. The use of the black and white effect in this photograph emphasises the representation in this picture as well as creating a dim and dark atmosphere which shows the meaning behind the photograph. To develop this photograph the technique framing could have been used to isolate the sign from the whole scale of the landscape to exaggerate the meaning even more. Furthermore the still movement of the breeze is shown by the grass in this photograph which makes this photograph even more appealing and complex to look at.

This photograph was taken by the photographer Fay Godwin and the idea of using the aspect of texture in a landscape as been used in this photograph. This is because Fay Godwin has taken this photograph of the wall close up and the depth of the landscape behind this main focus. The black and white effect increases the detail in the stone wall and allows the tones of the stones to be enhanced. The stones have a rough texture to them which is shown with great detail because of the position that Fay Godwin took this at. Furthermore this photograph also shows the aspect of scale and this is exaggerated by the use of the formal element depth in this photograph. overall I really like this photograph as it shows complex techniques used in it to show as much detail as possible and to make a simple man made wall look very interesting and appealing to look at.

The influence that Fay Godwin has on my own project and ideas for my shoots is that she was the photographer that gave me my starting point this is because a lot of her work shows the aspect of scale. All her work is very interesting and the locations she used to show the aspect of scale are locations that I can similarly go too to take photographs. Therefore the locations of nature landscapes and the sea side are the first two shoots that I will do to begin my journey into aspects of landscapes.

Overall I have really enjoyed researching about Fay Godwin and further detail into her work as she has been a massive influence into my own work. The idea of converting all her photographs into black and white create different atmospheres that make her work more complex. As well as the different angles that she takes her work at are very unique and allow a main focus to be seen to give the audience a direction to look at when looking at her work. Fay Godwin's work is very stunning and the beauty of the landscapes make her work very appealing to look at and be influenced by.
